February 4, 2021 WYOMING GOVERNOR CREATES INITIATIVE TO STRENGTHEN STATE’S ECONOMY

On February 4, 2021, Wyoming’s Governor Mark Gordon unveiled a multi-pronged plan to strengthen and expand Wyoming’s economic pillars and to buoy the state’s economic recovery, with emphases on energy, tourism and agriculture. The plan incorporates an “all the above” energy approach, with a proposal to grant severance tax relief to the energy industry and incentives for carbon capture technology, trona, rare earth elements and critical minerals development in the state, including through innovative technologies associated with Wyoming’s coal resources. To enhance Wyoming’s tourism sector, newly introduced legislation seeks to redeploy capital to expand operations and increase recreational opportunities for Wyoming’s parks and historic sites. Legislation has also been introduced to expand meat processing capacity, enhance school lunch protein content and guard against invasive plant species, all aimed at adding value to and growing Wyoming’s agriculture sector. Further, in an effort to ensure fair competition in the agriculture marketplace for Wyoming ranchers, an update is proposed to Wyoming’s current statute barring the Attorney General from investigating antitrust violations.
